Artistic journey

A life in tempo

  1. 01

    Origins

    1976 — 1998

From a Piano in Madrid to the World’s Great Stages

Born in Madrid, Pablo Mielgo began his musical journey at the piano before continuing his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, the Reina Sofía School of Music and London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama. From an early age, music became not only a profession, but a way of understanding the world. What started with a piano in Madrid would eventually lead him to conduct on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall, the Wiener Musikverein and major opera houses and orchestras across Europe, the United States, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.

    Apprenticeship

    1998 — 2010

Alongside the Great Conductors of His Time

Early in his career, Pablo Mielgo worked closely with some of the defining musical figures of his generation. He assisted and collaborated with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, James Conlon and Jesús López Cobos, experiences that deeply shaped his artistic vision and understanding of orchestral sound. Those formative years gave him direct access to the traditions of Europe’s great musical institutions while helping him develop a personal artistic voice rooted in emotional intensity, flexibility and musical storytelling.

Turning an Orchestra into an International Voice

Since becoming Artistic and Music Director of the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears in 2014, Pablo Mielgo has led a profound artistic transformation of the orchestra. Under his leadership, the OSIB expanded its international collaborations, raised its artistic standards and welcomed many of the world’s leading soloists and conductors. Artists such as Juan Diego Flórez, Lise Davidsen, Pretty Yende, Khatia Buniatishvili, Pinchas Zukerman and Emmanuel Pahud have collaborated with the orchestra during this period. The project also became deeply connected to the cultural identity of the Balearic Islands, combining artistic excellence with social outreach, educational programs and major open-air festivals such as the concerts at Castell de Bellver.

    Caixa de Música

    2020 — futuro

The vision of a new home for music

One of Pablo Mielgo’s most important institutional achievements has been his role as one of the main driving forces behind the future Caixa de Música — the new artistic home of the OSIB and one of the most ambitious cultural projects in the Balearic Islands. More than a concert hall, the Caixa de Música represents a long-term vision: a space designed to place Mallorca and the Balearic Islands on the international cultural map while creating a permanent center for orchestral, educational and operatic activity. For Mielgo, the project symbolizes the culmination of more than a decade of artistic development and cultural transformation.

A New Chapter in American Opera

In 2025, Pablo Mielgo was appointed Music Director of Florida Grand Opera, opening a major new chapter in his international career. Working alongside General Director Maria Todaro, he is leading the creation of the company’s new resident orchestra — a historic step for one of America’s oldest opera institutions. His arrival marks a renewed artistic vision for the company, reconnecting Florida Grand Opera with its historic role as a gateway for international operatic talent in the United States.

    Social impact

    2005 — presente

Music as a Social and Human Project

Beyond the podium, Pablo Mielgo has devoted much of his career to building musical and educational projects with social impact. Since 2005 he has led the SaludArte Foundation, promoting access to music and cultural exchange through international collaborations. He founded projects such as the BandArt Orchestra together with Sir Colin Davis, the Ibero-American Youth Orchestra, Presjovem and the “Madrid me Suena” Festival, always with the belief that music can transform lives and connect cultures. For Pablo Mielgo, conducting has never been only about interpreting a score — it has always been about building communities, creating opportunities and shaping cultural identity through music.
